Extraction 3 production begins

After the massive success of the first two films, Netflix’s hit action franchise extraction is officially moving forward with its much-awaited third installment, which took a long time to get off the ground after its initial announcement in TUDUM 2023. Tyler Rake is preparing for his next deadly mission, and after months of anticipation, we finally have boots on the ground with a new update straight from Australia.

Tyler Rake is bringing some familiar faces along for the ride. As we reported earlier this year, the following main cast members have been locked:

  • Chris Hemsworth The Invincible has officially closed its deal to reprise the role of mercenary Tyler Rake.
  • Golshifteh Farahani Nick Khan returns as Rake’s trusted handler, fellow mercenary and closest ally.
  • Idris Elba It has been confirmed that he will return as the mysterious operator known only as Alcott (or “The Man in the Suit”). Elba made a major surprise cameo at the end extraction 2Getting Rake and Nick out of jail in exchange for working for his mysterious boss.

The “Action Dream Team” is reassembling in a big way for the third film, although there is a major change in the writer’s room.

Sam Hargrave, who famously transitioned from stunt coordinator to a top-tier action director with the first two films, is officially back in the director’s chair.

However, whereas the previous two installments were written by Joe Russo, the scripting duties for the third film have been handed over to him. david weil (citadel, Hunter). The film’s characters are based on the graphic novel. CiudadWritten by Andy Parks.

Behind the scenes, the Russo Brothers’ AGBO banner continues production, along with Chris Hemsworth’s Wild State. Thanks to an updated production listing, here’s the huge roster of producers and creatives bringing the sequel to life:

As we previously reported, the sequel was slated for a summer 2026 release date. Today, thanks to a brand new press release, we can confirm that Filming has officially begun on the NSW South Coast and in Sydney, Australia.

The move to Australia marks a significant homecoming for lead star Chris Hemsworth. Whereas extraction 2 It was initially scheduled to be filmed in Sydney, but the COVID-19 lockdown forced that production to move to Prague and Vienna. Landing in Sydney for the third entry, Hargraves and Hemsworth are finally getting the Australian-based shoot they’ve been chasing since 2021.

Director Sam Hargrave shared his excitement in today’s press release:

“We’re very much looking forward to filming the third chapter of our Extraction saga here in New South Wales. Our aim has always been to push the boundaries of action filmmaking, and with Extraction 3, we’re making the biggest change yet.”

The large-scale production will create 450 local jobs and contribute an estimated $127 million to the local economy. It is heavily supported by the Australian Government’s Location Offsetting and Made in NSW Fund.

Producer Patrick Newall noted the tremendous support from local authorities, saying: “This is a big film and these invaluable partners have helped make our production here possible.” Debra Richards, Netflix’s director of APAC production policy, also voiced the streamer’s excitement to bring a project of this magnitude to a local crew.

According to our updated production grid, filming is expected to run From early July to early October 2026. While earlier rumors pointed to a European leg of shooting, current production documents confirm that shooting is taking place in Sydney, the NSW South Coast and Thailand.


Expansion extraction universe

extraction 3 That’s not the only project in the pipeline. Netflix and AGBO have been aggressively expanding the franchise into a massive cinematic universe.

As we recently covered, two major spin-offs have already completed production and will likely hit the service before the third major film:

  • rental (TV series): The eight-episode global thriller starring Omar Sy (hip) navigating a high-risk hostage rescue mission in Libya as a mercenary. Shorun by Glenn Mazzara (the walking dead).
  • tigo (spin-off film): A South Korean action film starring Don Lee (train to busan, eternal) as a former child soldier turned mercenary bent on vengeance. Directed by Lee Sang-yong.

Given the wrap date of October 2026, we’re still a long way away from seeing Tyler Rake back on our screens.

extraction 2 Filming completed in March 2022 and reached Netflix in June 2023 – a turnaround of 15 months. If the third film follows the same post-production schedule as its predecessor, we’re looking at a real late summer or fall 2027 Release date.
