After a tough detour to 1970s Los Angeles in Season 4, fans will be thrilled to hear that Season 5 is bringing the action back to its roots.

Yes! In a huge vote of confidence, AMC Networks officially renews dark winds for the fifth season on February 5, 2026 – more than a week before the season 4 premiere.
“Over four seasons, dark winds “It masterfully blends compelling character-driven stories, Navajo culture, spirituality and breathtaking cinematography,” said Dan McDermott, chief content officer, AMC Networks.
As an added bonus behind the camera, series star and executive producer Zane McClernan will make his television directing debut in Season 5. The show is created by Graham Rowland and executive produced by John Wirth, with George RR Martin and the late Robert Redford among its executive producers.
What is the production status of Season 5?

According to production sheets, filming for the fifth season began on March 16, 2026 in Santa Fe, New Mexico and officially ended on June 11, 2026. The new season will consist of eight hour-long episodes, with a healthy estimated episode budget of around $5 million.

While AMC is keeping the overarching central mystery tightly under wraps, recent casting announcements have given us a big peek behind the curtain at character arcs and the fallout of season 4.
The biggest bomb? The murder of Gordo Sena, acting chief of the Scarborough Police Department (played by A. Martínez). now we know this John Hugenakker (Impotent, Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan) has been cast as a series regular playing Gordo’s younger, more buttoned-up successor, Sheriff Mark Bishop. According to the character description, Bishop allows Leaphorn to join the investigation of Gordo’s murder, but the two soon clash over the boundaries of jurisdiction and who is really running the show.
On the personal front, we have to plan a wedding! After a season of build-up, Bernadette Manuelito (jessica matton) and Jim Chi (kiowa gordon) Tying the knot. Geraldine Keems Returning as her Season 1 character, Alice Benally (Emma Leaphorn’s mother), to help Emma prepare for a traditional Navajo wedding.
However, Bernadette’s life is about to get complicated in other ways. gregory cruz (Mayans M.C) has joined the cast in the recurring role of Bernadette’s biological father Ed Manuelito. Ed, a World War II veteran suffering from PTSD, abandons Bernadette at a boarding school after their mother’s untimely death. Now, fifteen years later and armed with new sobriety and the support of the Church, he is returning to try and make amends.

when will it happen dark winds Will Season 5 be on Netflix?
AMC confirms that Season 5 will debut on AMC and AMC+ 2027. Given that production completed in June 2026, we fully expect it to premiere on the network in the first quarter of 2027 (similar to the February premiere of season 4).
So, does this mean when can Netflix users expect it? We can track the possibility based on previous AMC additions. Here’s the historical Netflix release pattern:
- Seasons 1 and 2: 19 August 2024
- Season 3: 27 October 2025
- season 4: July 5, 2026 (about 5 months after AMC premiere)
If Season 5 comes to AMC in early 2027, you can comfortably expect dark winds Season 5 will arrive on Netflix in summer or early fall 2027.
Of course, that’s assuming Netflix and AMC keep agreeing to license the new series, and it’s drawing such good viewership, we can bet on that happening, but even if Netflix doesn’t get new seasons, the show will remain on AMC and AMC+.
